This PLA Tri Color Change-Lava Filament turns from black to Red to Orange - lava like when exposed to temperature

EL3D® Temperature effecting color change filaments are Thermochromic filaments that change color at varying temperatures. These materials can be treated like any other standard PLA filament but with a fun difference. They change color at different temperatures.

Thermochromic filament is a typical PLA filament with additive that makes it change color when the temperature changes. Under 30ºC it looks black and above that it starts getting brown, and when the temperature is above 45ºC, it starts getting yellow. The darkness of the color is dependent on temperature.

EL3D® is a premium quality manufactured filament that produces the finest prints. Never using recycled materials and adhering to 100% use of pure raw materials leads to consistent high-grade filaments. The promise of high-purity, high-precision filaments is ensured through the ROHS certification and SGS testing.

Excellent material

The tri color filament works as advertised, and the color change is very fun to witness. I will say the initial/base color is a little more gray/green/translucent rather than solid black. It will depend on the wall thickness or top/bottom layer count you print for your parts to maximize the effect.

Can achieve max color change with boiling water or by leaving in direct hot sunlight etc. (beware potential warping as with all PLA in excessive temp). Additionally you can rapidly reset the effect to base color by putting parts in the freezer to cool.

Overall I am very satisfied with the filament and have ordered additional spools.

Very cool

Quality of print is top notch, dropped a star only because it takes quite a bit of heat (ie: hot water) to get it to go yellow again after printing. Will go to an orangey colour with body heat.

Printed a Bulbasaur for the kids using this as the test model, turned out very well - no bubbling, etc.

I could definitely see where this would be used, practically, if you wanted to create enclosures to test where hot-spots occur on components, etc. Would help decide venting, etc.
